The Cold War 1953-1992

The alliance between the West and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) collapsed soon after the allied victory of 1945.

Alliances on both sides were quickly solidified. The western nations formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), signing the agreement on 4 April 1949.

The Warsaw Pact was formed 14 May 1955 and included Russia and most of the nations of Eastern Europe.

A policy of collective deterrence was adopted by the West with an aim of convincing the USSR that the cost of going to war would be greater than any derived benefit.

The tension that resulted was termed the "Cold War." Although the Cold War was a "War without Battles", The RCR played a role in Canada's small but important contribution to NATO deterrence. The RCR contributed a Battalion to the Canadian Army formation stationed in West Germany, the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (4 CMBG), and also a Battalion to the rapid reaction forces stationed in Canada ready to deploy to NATO's Northern Flank (Denmark / Norway). This force was called Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (Land) or as it was better known, the AMF (L).
