Norman "Brooke" Claxton

CLAXTON , Norman ("Brooke") Leonard, CD Norman Claxton passed peacefully in  Calgary on May 17, 2009 in his 82nd year. Son of the late Edward J. (Ted)     Claxton and Dorris (nee Larocque), Norman was born at Brockville, Ontario on December 31, 1926.

Survived by his wife Marian Helen (nee Rowsome), he will be missed by his sons Edward W. (Ted) Claxton (Lois), Robert N.G. (Bob)  Claxton and daughter Connie L. Claxton and grandsons Anthony MacDonald (Karla), and August Claxton. He is predeceased by his brother Robert and sisters Freda and Constance.

Known to his comrades by his nickname "Brooke", Norman had a distinguished career in the Canadian Armed Forces. He enlisted
as a Boy Soldier in 1943 and began his career with the Royal Canadian Regiment serving with them during two tours in Korea. He was later posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry where  he served with distinction as a paratrooper and paratrooper instructor. He retired from active duty with the military at age forty-five having attained the rank of Warrant Office. His last posting was to Calgary which had become  his adopted home. He pursued several different employments during the subsequent twenty years before he retired. After his retirement  from the Armed Forces he became active as a member and officer in the Royal Canadian  Legion Branch 264, was active in the Korean Veterans' Association and the PPCLI Retired Sgts and WO's Association.

Norman and Marian were active community volunteers for the 1988 Winter Olympics and enthusiastic supporters of the Trans-Canada Trail. A special thanks to the staff at the  Beverly Centre - Lake Midnapore for their years of dedicated care. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Royal Canadian Legion (1910    Kensington Road N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 3R5), Calgary Humane Society (4455 - 110 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7) or the Beverly Centre - Lake Midnapore  (500 Midpark Way S.E., Calgary, AB T2X 3S3). A Memorial Service will be held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South, Calgary on  Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE & CREMATORIUM, 12700 Macleod Trail South, Calgary.

The reason for the nickname "Brooke" is this.
Brooke Claxton was our Defence Minister during the Korean War.
