The RCR Gate in Halifax
Fellow Royals
The Royal Canadian Regiment has a long and rich connection with the City of Halifax. For example, between 1905-1914 a primary function of the Regiment was to provide a substantial garrison for Halifax Fortress and its defences. During these years Regimental Headquarters, the Regimental Band and six companies of The RCR were located at Halifax. Earlier, during the South Africa War, the eight companies of 3rd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, garrisoned Wellington and Glacis Barracks at Halifax from March 1900 - October 1902. Immediately following the First World War and until the outbreak of the Second World War, "A" Company, The RCR, was stationed at Halifax.
Corporal Patrick Embree of the Halifax Garrison, with a keen knowledge for and knowledge of regimental history, and especially The RCR connection with Halifax has assembled a fine collection of historic photographs of The RCR Gate and former barracks occupied by the Regiment in Halifax. Please see the e-mail an dattachment below. This collection includes a photograph of The RCR Gate in Halifax as it is today, photographed by Corporal Embree himself. Corporal Embree is to be thanked and commended for his fine efforts in preserving and highlighting the Regimental history in Halifax. I would also like to thank CWO Charlebois for bringing Cpl Embree's work to our attention. Well done Cpl Embree!
