Passed away peacefully at Kensington Village, London in his 94th year. Survived by Mary, his wife of 66 years, and his children, Robert (Trish Zapf), Richard (Nancy) and grandchildren, Christopher, Sasha, Jeffrey and Laura.
A life dedicated to service, Spin joined The Royal Canadian Regiment as a "Boy Soldier" in August, 1935. He served overseas from 1939 in the Second World War, landing on the Brest Peninsula before the fall of France. He fought through Sicily and Italy and was awarded the Military Medal for courage and initiative during fighting near San Marco, Italy on the 6 October of 1943. Retiring from the Canadian Army in 1965, he joined Mutual Life of Canada.
Highly respected for his voluntary service to others throughout his life, his dedication was recognized with the awarding of Life Member of The Royal Canadian Regiment Association and Patron of the London Branch. He was a devoted member of the Victory Branch #317, Royal Canadian Legion and was active with youth Track and Field at the Provincial level. He was recognized by the Memorial Boys and Girls Club of London as the longest serving volunteer.
In lieu of floral tributes, donations to The RCR Museum "Building For The Future" Campaign or the Memorial Boys and Girls Club of London would be appreciated.
On Friday, July 22, 2011 at 10am, there will be a Military Inurnment Service at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. All are also welcome for a Celebration of Life from 12-4 pm which will be held at Wolseley Barracks Officer's Mess, 701 Oxford Street East. Online condolences at
