Medals named to soldiers of the Regiment appear on the market, either through dealers or on-line sales, quite infrequently. Often, those that do appear have been separated from documents and other artifacts that help to define the soldier's life and experiences. In many cases, medals have even become separated from the other medals the soldier was awarded, often because the medals of soldiers who died over seas, or who passed away later in life, were shared between family members so that each might have a memento of the man.

This dispersal of effects, and separation of artifacts, occurs when following generations don't find the need to keep all items (or keep them together) to satisfy their own emotional needs for a sentimental connection.  Because of this it is especially endearing when medals appear that have been kept with associated artifacts.

Today I received the latest addition to my little collection of regimental medals. It was delight to unwrap the package and see the collection of badges that came with them.

George Cowdery was a 20-year-old farmer living in Cayuga, Ontario, when he attested for overseas service with the 114th Canadian battalion on 6 Dec 1915.

His attestation paper can be viewed on line at the Library and Archives Canada:

From my transcription of the Regiment's Part II Daily Orders, I can add the following information about his time with The RCR overseas:

25 Dec 1916 - Taken on Strength from Reserve Units

12 Feb 1917 - Receives 14 days Field Punishment No. 1 for "Absent from Rifle Inspection Parade."

24 Jul 1917 - Struck off Strength on being Invalided and posted to Nova Scotia Regimental Depot, Bramshott. (Sick); transported aboard the H.S. Pieter de Conick

As can be seen above, with Cowdery's British War Medal and Victory Medal were the following:

RCR Cap Badge
RCR shoulder titles
CANADA shoulder titles
Lewis Gunner badge
Wound Stripe
Overseas service chevrons
Class "A" War Service Badge (Link)

Also in the box were some well-worn leather-covered general service buttons and a few belt and neck hooks removed from a uniform tunic.

(It will take an examination of his service record to verify Cowdery's entitlement to all these items, but for now they will be maintained together.)
