SAULT STE. MARIE COMMUNITY EARNS $5,000 PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT GRANT

Thousands Of Area Residents Voted Every Day For A Month
To Help The Queen Elizabeth School Get A New Playground

April 2, 2010—Washington D.C.— The children at Queen Elizabeth School really have something to celebrate today. Their parents and community members rallied together to garner 39,886 votes online to help them secure a playground equipment grant of up to $5,000.

Last month, American non-profit KaBOOM! premiered a “Promote Your Project” video contest. Forty-four communities worked to create a video that showed the world why they need a new playground. Then, ten were chosen to compete in the finals and encouraged to rally their communities to get the word out however they could, placing stories in local papers and on local television stations, e-mailing to friends and contacts, as well as sending out Facebook and Twitter appeals.

For the past 30 years, the students of Queen Elizabeth School have only had one play structure—the dino climber, so they were eager to participate in the competition. All throughout March, this school of 234 rallyied more than 39,886 votes for their video. Their incredible efforts will get them up to $5,000 in grants towards equipment for the playground they’re building in honor of Master Corporal Scott Vernelli, a member of The Royal Canadian Regiment who was killed in Afghanistan last year. The school is still working hard to raise $50,000.00 for the playground, which is currently scheduled to be built on September 30th.

“Sault Ste. Marie’s efforts have just been extraordinary,” said Darell Hammond, CEO of KaBOOM!. “Not only did they create a really great video they can use to garner additional support, but the work they did to get out the vote was truly exceptional. The kids at the Queen Elizabeth School are really lucky to have such incredible community support for their project. This grant is just the beginning. I’m betting that a community that’s this determined and strong is in great shape to raise the rest of the money they need to make their kids’ dreams come true.”

This grant competition is part of the online tools and resources KaBOOM! makes available to all communities. In addition to grant opportunities, KaBOOM! has posted all their knowledge and playground building experience online, giving everyone access to the information they need to build a playground on their own. The KaBOOM! website also allows individuals to self-organize, connect with experienced playground builders and find other advocates for the cause in their communities.

About KaBOOM!

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., KaBOOM! is a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play. Through community building, the company is focused on giving every child in America a great place to play within walking distance. Since 1995, KaBOOM! has used its innovative community-build model to bring together business and community interests to construct more than 1,700 new playgrounds, skate parks, sports fields and ice rinks across North America. KaBOOM! also offers a variety of resources, including an online community, free online trainings, grants, publications and the KaBOOM! National Campaign for Play, which includes Playful City USA and Playmakers – a national network of individual advocates for play. KaBOOM! also has offices in Chicago and San Mateo, Calif.
